🏢 Design Media

This was another challenging day with 🏢 Design Media, maybe even worse than yesterday. I don’t think I’m going to be able to be the new Scot. I get dumped into these situations where I need to support something I don’t have enough experience to support, and they want everything on the same timeline that was already established for the full engineering team.

Today, I made it clear I had 9.5 hours for the remainder of the week in order to hit under 36 hours for the week. This would make me eligible for the final (as of now) week of federal CARES stimulus unemployment. (I’m on WA Shared Work unemployment since my hours are being cut.) I worked 4.5 and said I was out for the day. TP had problems with the tracker earlier, and I asked him to just log manually. He had no problem with that. Shannon flipped out about it when she found out at around 4:30pm, and mobilized the cavalry.

I suggested we just have external resources log outside of Jira. Denise was talking about how much extra time that would take. This added almost another hour to my work day trying to deal with that, figure out a fix for the tracker, etc.

It was a huge fucking disaster. I was shaking by the time all this was over. I said I didn’t think I would stay under my 36 hours limit for the week, partly as a test to see if Denise would insist that I do. She didn’t seem to have a problem with my losing that $600. I pulled that back later and decided to take care of myself.

I’m not going to be the person who always has to pick up all the pieces. If I’m going to be the responsible one, I need to be the one making the calls as well. I can’t have people adding projects to my day willy nilly. I need to not be a W2 employee.

Rad Devon project

I’m struggling with what to do on my product. I have a product that is “validated” by Growth University’s standard, but it won’t make money that I feel makes it worthwhile based on the conversion rate multiplied by my subscriber numbers. I fear pushing ahead and hoping for the best, particularly since the conversion rate I have right now is derived from my most engaged subscribers. That rate is bound to be lower with the others.

I’ve thought about pivoting to an email newsletter with junior-developer friendly freelancing opportunities. I like this idea, and I think it could be more compelling for my audience. It’s also something I probably couldn’t charge as much for, and I would need a much higher conversion rate to make it viable.
