Webrings were popular in the 90s. You would join a webring and put a widget on your page. The widget would allow users of your site to move “forward” or “backward” in the ring going to other sites in the ring, ultimately wrapping back around to your site.

It was designed as a way for similar sites to share an audience. It died not long after it got started. I’m not clear why, but I think it was because the value proposition for users wasn’t clear. Why would a user go to other sites in the ring? I don’t think they knew.

What if the web ring was instead centered around what the user was looking for? I’d like to create a webring that, instead of being apart from the site’s content, is integrated with it. Instead of a naked link to other sites in the ring, articles from the other sites would be linked from related articles on the member site. It’s “Related Posts” but with recommendations from other sites.
