  • Poll: Who currently works as a developer
    • has worked in the past (even just a single gig or volunteer work)
  • What is your tech stack you feel most confident with?
  • Why do you want to be a developer?

Seekers:Q’s around their holistic situation:

  • Are you currently living with roomates?
  • (Revised above?) What is your level of concern about needing income to pay your bills right now?(Trying to move away from explicitly asking if they have a partner, live with roomates, or live with their parents. I find it unlikely that they are living alone or are homeless, but it is possible I suppose if they have a full-time job or some sort of trust fund?)
  • Which area do you live in?(trying not to be too invasive of exact towns/streets/etc but is important to understand cost of living and market available when not remote work)
  • Do you have a go-to mentor or resource (person) for your dev questions?
  • How long have you been searching for a job?
  • What does the idea of “freelancing”, or at least taking on project-based work, feel like for you?(I’m not sure how to word this… for me, calling the work “freelancing” makes me feel less enthusiastic than simply “contract” or “project-based”, but I want to be mindful of not leading the person one way or the other when phrasing the question. Mostly I want to know if they have feelings towards not being a “permanent” ongoing employee, or if they just haven’t thought of it before/ lack an understanding of what that looks like to work on contract/projects).
  • (possibly to replace the above question) What does fulfilling work with your technical qualifications look like? or What would your daily responsibilities look like in your dream job?
  • What is some advice you’ve heard that has inspired you / helped you become more competitive in your job search? or What’s the best advice you’ve been given about your job hunt?

Q’s around their technical qualifications:

  • Do you have any prior work experience in tech?(Could have been HR at a tech company, for instance. Could have network, familiarity with tech exposure)
  • Were you self-taught / boot camp grad / bachelor’s or master’s CS student?
  • Do you personally know someone who learned the same way you did that you feel is where you’d like to be?
  • What is a tech stack you feel least comfortable trying to apply or work on a project with?
  • What is something that you’d like to learn?
  • What kind of project or example of your technical skills are you most proud of showing? (This is more of a check, to see if they feel they have ANYTHING they are confident to show. If not, that could lead to some inspiration or realizations about their progress).
  • What kind of technical interview questions have you been asked?
  • What kind of interview questions have you been asked that you weren’t sure if you answered correctly? or What interview questions have you been asked that you struggled with?

“Finders” (People that found the job):

  • Do you have any prior work experience in tech?(Could have been HR at a tech company, for instance. Could have network/ familiarity with tech exposure)
  • Were you self-taught / boot camp grad / bachelor’s or master’s CS student?
  • What were some of the steps you took after your training that you think bridged your gap between being merely trained to being experienced enough to get paid doing this?
  • How long were you searching for a job?
  • What did your job search strategy look like?(applying like a mad person / networking events / forums / building your own projects / requesting to open source for someone else / begging / praying / wishing wells )
  • Do you have an inclination as to why your current employer / contractor is working with you in particular?(Did you possess a certain skill or have experience in something? Were you an acquaintance/ did you build trust/ were you a person familiar with their needs? Are you related to them?) or Why do you think you got picked for your current gig?
  • What kind of technical interview questions have you been asked?
  • What kind of interview questions have you been asked that you weren’t sure if you answered correctly?
  • What sort of learning are you doing (or did) in order to perform your current assignment well?
  • What is some advice you’ve heard that inspired you / helped you become more competitive during your job search?
  • What is something you still don’t know how to do related to your job/project?
