Finding New Link Opportunities

  • Can find competitor’s links in Moz Link Explorer
  • Can find intersection of multiple competitors links
    • Moz Link Intersect tool will find these
      • This still forces you to manually select

Start with the SERP page you want to build to and the page you’re trying to rank to

  1. Search for keyword you want to rank for
  2. Find which domains link to top-ranked pages on that search engine results page

Moz Link Opportunity Finder (currently at the MozLab) will do this for you.

Keyword Research

  • When can a page rank for two keywords? When should we split it?
  • Textual similarity doesn’t always work. “men’s jeans” and “women’s jeans” are textually similar but conceptually very different. Same for a search for “repair fence” (which implies DIY) vs. “fence repair” (which usually means the searcher wants to hire someone)
  • Check for overlap on the SERP

Use onpage keyword grouper (currently at MozLab) to get similar keywords and find how well optimized the page is for each group. Split off content relevant to lower ranking groups and create new content. Google wants your site to rank for those words, but the specific page isn’t quite right.
