Hi Devon! Thanks for reaching out. You really do a great job in your role and I appreciate it.There’s been a lot going on here. I was able to get my personal commitments finished, so now I can devote a lot more time to learning. I’m finding that I need to really stick with the pomodoro method when I’m doing this work: last night I was up till 3 banging on a Codewars problem. I wrote a CLI app that puts the computer to sleep after the countdown ends; I just haven’t been using it :D

Biggest update: my Big Goal has gotten more fun! I was talking with a good friend about how I was trying to decide whether to move to Boulder/Austin/Mendocino, and he said, “Why don’t you get an RV and do all three?” So I now have a new Big Goal. See attached brochure. I can’t decide on the 23FB, with the bathroom far from the bed, or the 25FB/RB, with the bigger sitting space. What do you think? :D

Big change: I have switched my focus from Ruby on Rails to JS/Node/Express. When I picked up the Rails tutorial again recently it (like 500K other apps) had been affected by the mimemagic debacle. I’m not sure what code of mine broke, but after 3-4 hours of fighting it and failing, I threw up my hands.I am a big Eric Elliott fan, and I still had lifetime access to his site from the last time I tried this way back when. He’s got an Express tutorial now that’s very good, so I’ve jumped into that. And Codewars has been awesome for learning nuts and bolts.

Getting work already and thinking about small businesses: I’ve had a friend reach out for me for help with her website. She’s not a very technical person. She has a site built on GoDaddy, that has… some problems :) She’s already been to three different devs trying to get it done and it’s still not in a good place. As you might expect, it looks like she has had a communication problem. Once we spent a couple hours talking things through, it turns out she has a couple asks that seem super easy, one that sounds easy but I want to check with you about, and one that’s probably not doable using GoDaddy’s tools but that will be interesting to discuss. You can check out her site here: www.ceramoni.shop Working with her has been really useful, because I’ve been thinking hard and reading lots about how to set up sites for small business owners who aren’t technical. This is a great exercise for me, because I’ve got 15 years’ experience in restaurants and 2 years’ experience as a lawyer, so I’ve got some natural connections to non-technical small-business owners. She also keeps telling me that she wants to pay me for my time, which is great :)

What I would like to discuss:

  • Learning progressions, resources, and other recommendations you may have for JS/Node
  • Looking at my friend’s specific issues and requests
  • Talking generally about CMSes, JAMstack, static-site generators, and all the things you’ve learned about working with non-technical small-business owners.
