I listened to your episode on the Code Newbie podcast and really got a lot out of it. I’ve been studying front-end development since March, and I’m thinking about trying my hand at freelancing soon to build up some real-world experience. I’d appreciate some guidance about the next few steps ahead!

A quick bio: I’m 29, married, and employed as an editor at a fairly entry-level position (40K/year) in NYC. I’m transitioning to a development career because 1) I’ve found that I really enjoy making sites and 2) I want to be able to support my family in the future.

The promise of a much better salary has been a huge motivator, and I’ve been coding 3+ hours daily since around April.

Right now I have a good grip on HTML, CSS (comfortable with Flexbox & Grid), and a lot of the fundamental theory behind Javascript. (I’m comfortable with Sass and Bootstrap too.) I’m currently focusing on learning DOM manipulation with JS, and my next goal is to move on to React once I’m comfortable making sites/apps with Vanilla JS.

My long-term goal is to find a front-end job here in NYC by next March. Although I’d like to start applying by December at the latest.

My short-term goal is to get much better building sites with HTML, CSS, and Vanilla Javascript so I can move on to React and other frameworks and libraries. I think freelancing would be a great way of doing that while gaining real experience, and it would make me more job-ready.

Here’s a link to my portfolio, with three recent projects.

I really appreciate this service you’re offering. Hopefully you have time to squeeze in a session for me!
