Thank you for your time. I currently am finishing a coding boot camp here in San Diego and working as an unpaid developer intern here at a local startup. I would like to accomplish a few things. One would to be to build a portfolio of work to show to potential employers. I do have a portfolio site up that shows the projects that I have completed ( warrengyoung.com to be exact) for my bootcamp and think it would be best to get some live professional examples. Two, earn income for the time being and potentially start a business. Similar to you, a year ago today actually I quit my job to pursue something on my own. Tried a few different things (which was a mistake I made) but knew that web development was something I wanted to pursue. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you again for your time. Have a wonderful day!

Warren has an unpaid internship, but the company is not hiring anyone. Advised him to consider freelancing. Suggested BNI, Chamber of Commerce, general business meetups, or industry-specific meetup. Recommended he structure his portfolio to focus on the people he wants to work for and the problem he solves. Told him he doesn’t have to choose. He can keep the other site around as well.

He said a friend’s mother works in holistic healthcare and has been having more events at her business. He wants to build a site for her focused on the event side of her business. Recommended Modern Tribe’s The Events Calendar and Event Tickets Plus.

Says he is an ambivert. Gets energy from being alone. Doesn’t feel bad about selling in person. Receptive to freelancing.

Identified next steps:

  • Figure out who he wants to work for and start getting in front of them.
  • Build a case study from friend’s mom’s project.
