I am definitely interested in the mentoring session. I am a recent graduate of the Flatiron school in London. It’s a boot-camp where I did Ruby, JS and React. I’ve been looking for my first role and having interviews. I listen to various podcasts daily and came across your talk about freelancing.

I am considering getting involved in some agency work but CSS wasn’t part of our curriculum and I am not sure if I am ready. There are so many things to learn and a lot goes into being a developer. I also feel that when I put more effort into front end stuff knowledge of the back end slips away and vice versa.

My plan this month is to focus on CSS and build responsive pages.

I’ve done a lot of side projects and I’ll paste links to a couple below.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

Session Notes

Took a front-end role with a small startup. He will be doing front-end work.

Having trouble working with existing code.

Working with web components and material UI. Was accustomed to using React. Not sure where all the styles are coming from that he’s trying to override. Found some help in web components documentation.

Trying to learn to grow his career. Learning project management software (Jira). Learning to collaborate with a team.

Will be taking on more Javascript tasks. Currently tasked with mostly HTML and CSS. Used front-end questions Github repo. Was asked the difference between for loops and new ES6 syntax. Thinks his understanding helped in the interview.

Listens to a lot of podcasts.

Told him to push back as a senior developer.

Roadmap

  1. Read Clean Code
  2. Learn about business, startups in particular and start sharing those ideas
  3. Continue learning and honing back-end skills with side projects
