Hi,

I’m interested in mentoring and really hope I’m chosen for one of the slots! I’m currently a teacher; I’ve taught French and Spanish for 11 years. I’ve done well for myself professionally but unfortunately I feel like I’ve hit a wall in my career, and I desperately need a change. When I was younger, I used to make websites for fun, but it had never seemed like a viable career path and I gave it up when I went to college. I recently rediscovered it and it felt like riding a bike. I’ve been following some Udemy courses to refresh my knowledge of HTML and learn CSS. I’m playing around with basic layouts from memory and would like to really get to know Bootstrap. I know I’ll need to learn at least some Javascript soon. My hope is to do as much as I can on my own during the rest of the school year, and then really dive in once I’ve left my job. At that point, I want to refine my skills and hopefully start a business/work as a freelancer. When I heard your episode of CodeNewbie, I felt like what you said made a lot of sense: I want autonomy. I crave the ability to do something I enjoy on my own terms and build up a client base. I’m not opposed to the idea of eventually working for/with someone else, but I do think the end goal is to work for myself. Plus I like the sense of accomplishment I get when I create something new and when I figure out a problem.

I hope I’ve given you enough background on where I’m at and what my goals are. I’d really love a mentoring session because I honestly don’t know anyone personally in this field, so I’m trying to build up a network on Facebook groups and Meetups, but I still lack someone I can really ask questions and who can give me practical advice.
