Yes, a mentoring session would be great!

My big goal is to work remotely or freelance full time within the next 5 years. I currently work at an advertising agency as a financial manager, but the agency is supportive of me doing more digital work. I’ve used Wordpress to build a couple of client websites and I’ve run a couple of digital campaigns. This work has been a great opportunity to learn, and I would like to become a full time web developer in the next year. I’ve studied HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with FreeCodeCamp and some Udemy courses. I’m still far from proficient and plan to build my skills with more projects. I’m planning on learning React next, and I hope to start building websites in React for our agency within the next 6 months. What I’m really wondering is, does this seem like a good plan of attack? When should I take on freelance work? I would love to get your thoughts.
Gavin is very nice and smiley. He has done some WordPress projects at his work. Wants to dig a little deeper into that. Also wants to learn React. Told him to be careful obsessing about technology. The clients who care about it also want you to have 5 years of experience. Find clients who just have a problem they want solved. Sell them the solution instead of “web development.” He asked about pricing, hourly rate to start. Gave him some advice and suggested moving to value-based pricing as soon as he can by quantifying results on his early projects. Asked if he wanted to be an early reader of my book. He said he’d like that.
He asked about finding clients. Talked to him about general thoughts around which clients are ideal and how to start relationships with them. Then gave him some specific ideas about where to go to find them. Impressed the importance of being specific about defining your audience.
