Hi Devon,

I just listened to your CodeNewbie episode yesterday and loved it! Thank you so much for this opportunity. A little about me - I’m a recent Flatiron School graduate, and have a potential client who wants to be taught in how to manage a WordPress site. I’ve used and built with WordPress in the past so that’s not my worry, but her company will be paying me and this is my first time freelancing so I’m a bit clueless on how to build a contract, bill the client, etc. I would love any advice or resources you could send my way!

Replied with my not yet released email course part on contracts

Hi Devon,

Thank you so much for all of these resources! I also really liked the web dev gift list ideas you sent out earlier today. I don’t believe the freelance client I met with is going to work out, but I learned a lot from it and also took away a lot of questions so I can be better prepared the next time around. I did set a time through your calendly for Thursday, 12/20 at 11:30am CST if you’re still able to meet for a mentoring session. I’ve had a few questions about how to bill clients/billing timelines, and filing for a LLC vs S-corp.

Thank you again, I look forward to speaking with you next week!

From Calendly:

I’d like to get a feel for best practices in billing, as well as what kind of paperwork needs to be filed prior to starting to freelance.

Erica had several questions about freelancing including how to invoice and how to form her company. She also had questions about what is reasonable to go through for a free discovery process. I encouraged her to stop those people and ask them to hire her for a discovery engagement. Gave her some general advice on marketing (technology stack vs. problem solving), contracts. She asked about trade-offs of freelance vs. working on a team.
