I’m very interested in being mentored, in regard to freelancing.
I’m currently a Senior Frontend Web Developer and have been working in the web industry since 2003. First designing, and them developing frontend and backend since 2006. I’ve dabbled in freelance in the past (1999-2012); but it was never a serious effort; just a few side jobs.
-
I’m interested in becoming more independent, from being an employee.
-
I don’t like the idea of my health insurance being tied to my employer.
-
I’d like my income to be diversified.
-
I’m very hesitant in regard to risk. I have a family I’ve got to provide for.
-
My strengths are in attention-to-detail and quality, at the expense of fast turnarounds. I’ve joked with my wife, that if I ever did freelance full time, I’d need to hire myself a boss just to keep on schedule.
Byran is concerned about making the transition. Talked about health insurance and how to go independent with that. Recommended talking to an agent to make sure he gets good coverage. Talked about various ways to diversify income- recurring income through retainers, charging for by-products, retaining ownership of code. Talked about achieving balance in perfectionism vs. pragmatism. He asked about transitioning since he’s risk averse. Told him he might start with the activities that require less input on his part or allow him to flex his input as needed. He asked about paid mentoring. Told him I would follow-up with him.
