I am currently a web developer. Right now I am trying to make it as a freelancer, but it is tough. I get most of my gigs via UpWork and local networking groups. I am managing to stay fairly busy, but I could always benefit from more projects and also better-paying projects. I am always trying to upgrade my skill-set and I am currently teaching myself React JS. A lot of employers want experience with Angular or React. I would also like to obtain freelance React gigs, Right now I am currently doing mostly WordPress work.
What he wants to accomplish in the session:
learn how to land better paying, more rewarding work!
Wants to be a full-time freelancer. Uses Upwork to find most work. Doesn’t like the quality of the work there.
Has tried doing some networking in-person but hasn’t had much luck. Often sales people or real estate. Has gone to groups that are more focused on technology. Not quite as structured as BNI.
Advised Bruce to try narrowing his focus and defining his customer. He said he doesn’t have the luxury of being picky. I told him it’s less about being picky and more about addressability: being able to find your market and speak their language. Gave him the example of a barber shop booking solution to show how you can speak to a client’s problems.
