My name is Brandon Jones and I heard you on the CodeNewbie podcast. I have been interested in the idea of freelancing now for almost a year, but I wasn’t sure if I had the necessary skills required to begin.

This December I will be graduating with an MS in nematology. Don’t know what nematology is…? Don’t worry, only a few people actually do. Throughout my program, I began to develop an interest in programming. This interest began to almost develop into an obsession. I have worked and built projects using a few different languages trying to get a feel for what I’d like to pursue. At this point, I’m fairly comfortable in JavaScript, Python, and somewhat C++.

I have been programming for a little over a year on my own and trying to learn constantly. Last May, I began a Computer Programming vocational certificate program through the local community college and this January, I will begin completing a bachelors in Computer Science part-time through the Oregon State online program. I’d like to figure out a way to get started freelancing while I complete the program. I will be in finishing online classes part-time so I will have the majority of my time to devote towards developing a freelancing career.

I’m an extremely self-motivated individual and have no problem putting in the extra effort and getting out of my comfort zone to get started. I just wasn’t sure how to go about getting started. I’d appreciate any advice or suggestions you could give!

Lives in Gainesville. Moving to Naples after graduating current program. Staying there to save money for a while before moving to NY.

Advised him to start making connections where he is now to harness thelarger business community there.

He is concerned there may not be space for him at his skill level between page builders and more demanding projects. Told him I think there is space. He mentioned WordPress. I told him there’s lots of work around WordPress.
