Ambria called Emily. Emily asked what she’s doing. She said she just got home from school. Emily asked if she did anything fun. She said not really. Emily said at least they’re half way through (the week). Ambria told her they retook their history test and should get it back tomorrow. Emily asked about math. Ambria said it’s OK. They have a test on Friday and a retake for their previous test next week. Emily said there’s “always a test, always something.” Emily said she had information about Reda. The stroke affected her peripheral vision on her left side. She won’t be able to recover it. It’s called a left visual field defect. She’s backslid on swallowing. She’s doing silent aspiration, meaning the liquid she consumes will go down the trachea instead of the esophagus. It’s not a huge amount to cause complications, but it’s enough to point out she has silent aspiration. Instead of having really thin water, it will be nectar thick (about the thickness of tomato juice) because the muscles aren’t strong enough to swallow regular liquid. Walking is not doing well. She has to relearn how to walk. The brain can compensate for the stroke, but it takes a while to retrain. It doesn’t always work. Emily says that isn’t the case here. She said “it’s a process” and laughed. She said she wanted to share that with Ambria. Emily said the whispering is hard to hear, and Reda has lots of damage. She asked if that was too much. Before Ambria answered, she said she explained it that way because that’s how it was explained to her. Ambria said she understood. Emily is hoping she can continue to progress with the next test. She isn’t quite ready to swallow on her own. Ambria said OK. Emily asked how Chester is doing. Ambria said she hasn’t heard from him in a while. Emily asked if he’s dead. Ambria said she doesn’t think so. She said she changed seats in Science and no longer sits near him. Emily told her she looks different and asked if it’s her hair. Ambria said she’s in different lighting. Emily said that might be it. Emily asked about roller derby. Ambria told her it’s good. She had practice yesterday. She said she doesn’t practice on Thursday and has it Saturday instead. Emily asked if she’s using her skateboard. Ambria said the ground is wet so she hasn’t been using it. Emily said it was 18 degrees this morning — kinda chilly. Ambria said, “18?! I thought it was chilly here!” Emily said the dog was cold this morning and that she’s wearing a sweater. Emily said it’s in the 30s there. Ambria told her it’s in the 40s here. Emily asked what shoes she wears to school when it’s rainy. She asked if Ambria changes shoes. Ambria said it’s not that far. She just wears her regular shoes. Emily asked about the cat bowl Ambria made in art. Ambria said they got it back and have been painting them the last couple of days. There was a long pause. Ambria said she should get off the phone. They ended the call at 3:08 PM.
