Ambria called Emily. Emily asked how she is doing. Ambria said she’s good. There were about 10 seconds of silence. Emily asked what Ambria had done today. Ambria said she had gone to a cafe, to the Goodwill, and to lunch. Emily asked if Ambria has her school supply list. Ambria said she has gotten a lot of it but still needs a graphing calculator. Emily asked what type. Ambria offered to send her an email with the exact one. Emily asked what she has already gotten. Ambria told her mom she got 4x 1.5” binders and told her the story behind them. She didn’t get any deeper into her list. Emily asked if she knows her classes. Ambria said she doesn’t know yet. Emily asked if she selected any classes. Ambria said she chose French and TA. Emily asked why she chose French. Ambria said she wanted to do it last year but it was full. Ambria asked how Reda is. Emily said she had a barium swallow today. Emily said the barium is a contrast. They x-ray while you swallow to test your swallowing ability. Emily said it didn’t go great. She can’t swallow. The flap that keeps liquid from going into your lungs is weak, so she still can’t eat. Emily said she doesn’t have dexterity. She would have to use her non-dominant hand. “It’s just not there.” They said they might do the swallow test in a couple of months. Emily said this test was to see where they need to go with her therapy. She can’t safely eat and drink. Emily asked if that makes sense. Ambria said it does. Ambria said she would email Emily some pictures soon to show Reda. Ambria asked if she’s talking any better. Emily asked her to repeat it twice. She then misheard. Ambria repeated one more time, asking about Reda’s whispering. Emily said it’s about the same. She’s trying to get the muscles stronger. It might or might not come back. They don’t know how recovery is going to go, but it takes a long time. Emily asked if Ambria has been back to the skate park. Ambria told her she went a few days ago, she thinks Sunday. She said that was fun. Emily asked if she will keep skating once she starts school. Ambria said she thinks so. Emily suspected Ambria will have to focus on roller derby then. Ambria said yes. Emily asked when it starts again. Ambria isn’t sure. Emily asked what color Ambria’s nails are. Ambria said they’re blue. Emily said she thought Ambria had painted them black. Emily asked if she paints them once a week. Ambria said whenever she feels like it. Emily asked if she has to use a lot of paint on her toenails because they’re so long. Ambria said she wanted to go. Emily said she could call on the phone the next time Skype isn’t working. Ambria said OK.
