Emily emailed us with 30 minutes notice to let us know she wouldn’t be available at the call time. She will be available at “6:15.” We said that was OK. Ambria called her at 3:13 PM. Emily asked what she is doing. Ambria said nothing. Emily asked if Ambria could see her. Emily said, “So, you’re doing nothing?” Ambria said she went to the gym this morning. Emily asked what she did at the gym. Ambria said she did weights, treadmill, and something else. Emily said she had something important to tell her. She said Reda had a stroke. Ambria started crying. Emily described what had happened. She had the stroke in her sleep. Emily said they found her while she was asleep. She said Reda can’t move her left side and can’t talk. Emily said she’s been with her since Thursday. She couldn’t swallow on Saturday. They were afraid she would develop complications from that. She is on a breathing machine. Emily said she is sedated. She opens her eyes and nods. She knows everyone. She can hear everything but can’t talk right now and can’t move her left side. Emily asked if Ambria had any questions. Emily didn’t tell her Saturday because she wanted to make sure she gives Ambria all the facts. She said Reda loves her very much and that they both know that. Ambria asked if Reda will be OK. Emily said she isn’t sure. She’s getting lots of conflicting information. Emily said she’s sorry to have to tell Ambria this. Emily said she’s trying her best to make the best decisions she can make. She wants to keep Reda here and has to make a couple of choices in the near future. Emily will do her best to keep her here. Emily said there’s a lot of brain injury on the right side of her brain effecting the right side of her body. They test her periodically to make sure she isn’t declining, making sure she can move all her limbs and she can. Moving is difficult right now. Emily is not going to tell Ambria she knows what will happen because she doesn’t know. “The brain is a funny, funny thing. I’m going to do everything I can for her, Ambria. I promise you that. I promise you. If you would like to come see her, I want you to do that. I’m sure she wants you to do that.” Her right eye can see and move. She can definitely tell what you’re saying but can’t respond. Emily asked if Ambria has any more questions. Ambria was quiet. “It would take a lot of work for her, a lot of people working with her with physical therapy, a lot of people working with her with speech therapy, but you know your Bee. If someone says to do 15 situps, she’ll do 50 situps.” “I’m being very honest with you. I would never be dishonest with you about this.” She apologized again to have to tell her and that Ambria had to be shocked by it. She said it’s a shock to everyone. Ambria said she wanted to go. Emily said OK. If she wants to talk more or has more questions, call or email. They ended the call at 3:25 PM.
